One moment of truth

lying to your children won’t always protect them from the dangers of life. it really shouldn’t be an option.

She ran out of the house like a rat trying to escape being hunted by a cat. Her mother shouted from within, “abeg help me catch that girl” but who cares?
Onome was the only child of her mother, she never had someone to call a father. Despite being the only child, she never gave her mother peace of mind, hardly would a day go by that people won’t come looking for her, threatening to kill her. Many married women has accused her of ruining their marriage because of the affairs she was having with their husbands. Onome was indeed very promiscuous.
Apart from being a cheerful giver, she was also very notorious, always fighting for one thing or the other. She was popularly known for her usual slang, money must be made.
Truly Onome lacked the basic needs of a child while she was growing up. She thought her father was dead because that was what her mother made her believe, but the truth is that her father rejected her pregnancy, mama onome out of fear of losing her life, kept the pregnancy and hoped everything would be fine. She worked day and night just to make ends meet and give Onome the care she deserved, but she never got it right. She enrolled Onome in school, but she could not afford to pay her school fees, Onome didn’t finish her primary education before she dropped out and wandered into the streets. For a little girl of ten , she knew almost nothing about life, she just wanted to help her mother. Whenever she saw her mother crying, she would console her. “Mama no cry again, no worry I go make money for you. I go buy you fine things, I go even build house for you”. Onome wasn’t always a bad example, she started well but she lost her way.
She started with menial jobs and errands running, she would volunteer to help people and ask for money in return. But as she grew up, she started getting attention from young men. It wasn’t difficult for them to get to her because they knew she loved money. Once she discovered that she could get easy money by making herself available to young men, she stopped all the menial jobs she was doing and focused more on her beauty so that she could attract more attention. And that was the end of the good Onome.
On that very day, she ran out of the house because she was trying to escape from her mother who tried to stop her from going out to meet her client. Mama Onome felt bad and cried, she regretted the fact that she allowed her daughter to fall into the traps of life, she regretted the fact that she had to let her daughter drop out of school to find money. She remembered herself as a young girl too, she was more like her daughter, she also gave herself to a man for money, she got pregnant and tried to abort it, but she was told that her chances of survival were slim. History was repeating itself, she was confused and she didn’t know what to do. She felt depressed and dejected.
She said to herself, “I don fail, e don finish for me, wetin happen to me don dey happen to my pikin.
She attempted to poison herself, but Onome came in right in time and stopped her. “Mama, wetin dey happen nah, why you wan kill yourself” Onome asked with tears in her eyes. “why i no go kill myself? All the things wey you dey do no good, you no make me happy, you no dey hear the things wey I dey tell you. With tears in her eyes, she told Onome why she never had a father, she apologized for lying to her and begged her to change. They both cried for hours alone inside their room.
That little moment of Truth had a big impact on Onome’s life, her mother noticed gradual changes in her and she thanked God for giving her a second chance.
